Make the tour a conversation, not just a walkthrough
A tour is your chance to connect the appearance of a community with the support your loved one would receive. Bring the same questions to each San Antonio assisted living community. Write down the answers and note which details need written confirmation.
Include the prospective resident when possible. Their questions about privacy, routines, meals, and daily comfort belong alongside the family's questions about care and cost. This checklist is designed for discussion; it does not replace an individual assessment or review of the admission agreement.
Licensing, suitability, and everyday assistance
- What is the facility's license type and number, and how can we verify it?
- How do you assess a prospective resident's physical and medical needs?
- Which needs can you support, and which would require another setting?
- How is help with dressing, bathing, and bathroom routines arranged?
- What medication support is available, and how are questions communicated?
Ask for examples of how the process works rather than a general promise of personalized care. Explain the help your loved one needs on a typical day so the answers relate to a real situation.
Staffing, communication, and safety
- What is the actual staffing arrangement during the day and overnight?
- How does a resident request assistance, and who receives that request?
- How are changes in condition or care needs communicated to family?
- Who is our regular contact, and how do we raise an unresolved concern?
- What safety features can you demonstrate, and what are their limitations?
A small building does not establish a particular staffing ratio or response time. Ask specific questions and distinguish a demonstrated feature from an outcome someone cannot guarantee.
Bedrooms, bathrooms, and shared spaces
- Is the bedroom private, and what furniture may we bring?
- Are bathrooms private, shared, or communal, and how does assistance work?
- Can we walk the actual route between the bedroom, bathroom, and dining area?
- Where can residents spend quiet time or visit with family?
- How are meals, preferences, and any dietary questions discussed?
The floor plan helps you prepare, but an in-person visit allows a more practical conversation. Ask before taking photographs so you do not capture residents or private information.
Costs, agreements, and changes over time
- What is the total proposed monthly price after assessment?
- Exactly what is included, and what expenses remain separate?
- Is there a community fee, deposit, or other move-in charge?
- What could trigger reassessment or a rate change, and how is notice given?
- What are the payment, cancellation, move-out, and refund terms?
Request documents to review at home. If an answer is unclear, ask for clarification before signing or arranging a move. Compare the same services across quotes rather than comparing advertised starting rates alone.
Visits, routines, and short-term stays
- What are the visiting hours and arrangements for scheduling a tour?
- What are the pet, smoking, and vaping policies?
- What does a typical week look like, including quieter options?
- Are respite stays available, and what is the minimum stay?
- What must happen between this tour, assessment, and a possible move-in?
